As you are well aware, North Carolina continues to face a number of challenges in the areas of: 1) mental/behavioral health and substance abuse, to include the current opioid crisis; 2) the burden of chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and stroke; and 3) the prevalence of behavioral risk factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and lack of physical activity; particularly among our rural and underserved populations.

This Roundtable is intended to bring together a diverse group of healthcare stakeholders, to include providers, payers, employers, policy makers, government officials and consumers; to identify ways in which telehealth might be used to mitigate some of these challenges.  The end goal of the Roundtable will be the development of a two- to three-year strategic action plan for facilitating the use of telehealth technologies to:

·       increase access to mental/behavioral health and substance abuse prevention and treatment services;

·       strengthen our capacity to provide appropriate care management for those with chronic conditions; and

·       improve the quality and availability of wellness programs in rural and underserved populations.

As a result of a Roundtable such as this one, other states within the mid-Atlantic region have been able to effect policy changes, including enactment of parity legislation and enhanced coverage for telehealth services; obtain resources to support the expansion of telehealth initiatives such as Project ECHO statewide; and established the organizational infrastructure to provide grants for pilot projects and deploy technology to rural and underserved communities.    We hope you will join us as we explore ways to use telehealth as a tool for advancing the health of North Carolinians.   We are certain that by moving forward together in the same direction, we will have our own set of success stories to share.
